چکیده

a r t i c l e i n f o We explore aspects of two-part tariff competition between duopolists providing a homogeneous service when consumers differ with respect to their usage levels. Competition in only one price component (the fee or the rate) may allow both firms to enjoy positive profits if the other price component has been set at levels different enough between firms. Fixing one price component alters the nature of competition, indirectly introducing an element of product differentiation. Endogenous market segmentation emerges, with the heavier users choosing the lower rate firm and the lighter users choosing the lower fee firm. When no price component can be negative, competition becomes softer, profits tend to be higher but there is also a disadvantage for the firm that starts with a higher fee than that of its rival.

Horizontal Product Differentiation in Bertrand and Cournot Duopoly: the Bertrand Paradox Revisited and Comparative Competitiveness

This paper provides a simple model of endogenous horizontal product differentiation that has two important implications. First, the model can explain the “empirical Bertrand paradox” – the failure to observe homogeneous product Bertrand oligopoly. If product differentiation is possible at reasonable cost, then Bertrand firms would always invest in product differentiation. Using a quadratic util...

Centralized Supply Chain Network Ddesign: Monopoly, Duopoly, and Ooligopoly Competitions under Uncertainty

This paper presents a competitive supply chain network design problem in which one, two, or three supply chains are planning to enter the price-dependent markets simultaneously in uncertain environments and decide to set the prices and shape their networks. The chains produce competitive products either identical or highly substitutable. Fuzzy multi-level mixed integer programming is used to mo...

www.econstor.eu Product Differentiation and Competitive Selection

By studying the effect of different patterns of demand in an evolutionary selection model this paper shows how product differentiation reduces competitive selection pressure and thus increases the chances for the coexistence of firms. With the example of a duopoly it shows that: (1) a monopoly is the likely outcome of competition in homogeneous products, (2) although product differentiation doe...

Abstract of Paper for the 29th Research Conference on Communication, Information and Internet Policy

One of the major areas for research and investment related to the Internet is the provision of quality of service (QoS). In this paper, study the equilibrium outcomes when two Internet Access Providers (IAPs) interact. These IAPs are assumed to be rural dialup providers (as data shows that duopolies often exist in such markets), using empirically based demand functions. To determine the equilib...
